After graduating, El Shafei played professional tennis achieving highest ranking of number 16th in the world and received distinctions and awards from presidents Nasser, Sadat and Mobarak. El Shafei won Wimbeldon Juniors championship in 1964 and was also elected the No 1 sportsman of the year twice in 1969 and 1974.
