can I get my charity shop donation back?

I accidently sent some irreplaceable items belonging to my dead mother in law to the salvation army charity shop yesterday. Does any one know if I am within my rights to claim them back?

You can certainly ASK whether they still have them, but if they have already sold/binned them, there is nothing you can do about it – unless perhaps ask in the local paper whether the person who has bought them may be willing to let you have/buy them.

I want to turn my charitable donations into tax exemptions. How do I do that? How much does it take?

I heard once that for every so much given in charitable donations you can turn that amount into an exemption on your taxes. What is that amount?

To deduct a charitable contribution, you must file Form 1040 and itemize deductions on Schedule A.
Have a written communication from the organization containing the name of the organization, the date of the contribution and amount of the contribution
For more information on charitable contributions, refer to Form 8283 and its instructions, as well as Publication 526, Charitable Contributions. For information on determining value, refer to Publication 561, Determining the Value of Donated Property. These forms and publications are available at http://www.irs.gov by using the search box for each one or by calling 800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676).

Will charitable organizations like the Salvation Army come into your home to pick up furniture?

I have put things outside before, but was wondering if they would come in to pick up furniture that I can’t put outside (too heavy for just me), I also have a dresser upstairs. And, are there things they won’t pick up like my queen size sofa sleeper or washer and dryer in the basement. I can’t call today, no one is answering.

Yes The Salvation Army will pick up most thing if they are in good condition. It’s best to try and contact a charity shop as opposed to an actual church but if you contact your local church they will give you all the details you need. :)

Although they might not pick up electronics because of certain restrictions that they have in place.
